Originally the campus ministry of the Catholic Church was part of the “Groningen Student Platform for Life Stance”. Since this Platform, which is part of Groningen University, caters mostly to Protestants and offers the vast majority of activities in Dutch, it was very difficult for the Catholic ministry to fulfill the needs of the Catholic students who wanted to discuss and grow their faith in a Catholic setting. Therefore, in 2007, the bishop of Groningen decided to establish St. Augustine’s to reach out to those students who wanted to grow in a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Catholic faith.
Since the Catholic Church is a universal, worldwide Church, international students were already coming to St. Joseph’s Cathedral to attend Mass. St. Augustine’s was founded to bring all students together and welcome them in Groningen. The mix of both Dutch and international students allows all students to enrich their faith, learn about foreign practices and make new friends.
